A typical day working as a structural engineering designer!

About Us

At Learn with Pi we have three goals. 1. LEARN: We hope you find our content helpful; we want to take stress out of learning. 2. LAUGH: Let's have some fun too! With Pi, that's easy. Plus, math jokes are hilarious ;) 3. LAP: This one is for Pi... She insists on mandatory naps. Otherwise she threatens to go on strike. I'm not sure how hard she works, but we try to keep her happy. She is a great reminder that life is about balance. It won't matter how many practice problems you do if you are so exhausted you can't lift your pencil in a test. Remember, if Pi can sleep 15+ hours a day and still work to fit into a circle, you can get a good night's rest and still ace that test!

Who am I?

I am a math/science nerd with a big love for my adopted cat, Pi. Why are math and science so awesome?  Together they explain the world. In fact, they don't just explain it. They provide the tools for us to create the world we want. Learning is about so much more than  doing well on a test; it's about applying our knowledge every day.

You may be wondering, "Why does this crazy cat lady think she can teach me anything?" I have a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Engineering. To be honest, in school I probably went beyond my point of enjoyment with math. I haven't had to determine the volume of a hypothetical n-th  dimensional object since then and I have no motivation to do so again...

Never say never though ...

Why am I making tutorials? Well, I love helping people learn. I remember being in the first grade and helping my classmates with their math homework. Since then I've always loved being a thing-explainer. There is something special and rewarding about helping someone understand something for the first time. It's math-a-magical.

Pi

Pi was born in 2013. I didn't meet her until 2017 when my

home became her furrever home. Her bio at the Humane Society said her first family had a human baby and Pi couldn't adjust to no longer being the centre of the universe. Thankfully, she has happily taken over as the centre of my universe.

Pi loves to eat. She's a bit of a portly girl and must constantly watch her figure for her health. She gets very grumpy when you mention the word "diet" to her. I'm sure some people out there can relate.

If you are eating ice cream, she will use her paws to try and pull your spoon toward her face. As a result, in our house it is an accepted rule that one must stand while eating ice cream.  Otherwise, Pi will not give up trying to snatch it. She is a great example of perseverance in the face of defeat.

Aside from eating, she loves to find warm surfaces to lay on. Her mat by the fireplace, sunshine spots on the floor and especially a good lap. To balance all the laying idle and eating, she will occasionally play with a string, but only if it is wiggled into a perfectly sinusoidal wave form.
